About Us

The Bethany Beach Police Department has obtained the designation of "Recognition" from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). This organization represents an international commission representing the highest and most current policing philosophies.

We pride ourselves on the fact that we are the first small municipal police agency to obtain this rating in the State of Delaware.  We expect to become fully accredited by the year 2007.  All others and programs conform to the standards established by CALEA, requiring training and knowledge of law enforcement procedures and practices.

Our authorized strength is 11 full-time sworn officers and one non-sworn support person.  During the summer season we actively recruit about 15 seasonal police officers to handle extra calls for service.

In addition to the standard equipment issued to each officer by the agency, members of the department have the most current technologies available to them during their tour of duty.  Each cruiser is outfitted with mobile data terminals (MDT's), in-car video cameras, state of the art speed enforcement technology, LIDAR and RADAR, automatic external defibulators (AED's), patrol rifles, and shotguns.  A 24/7 911 dispatch (Sussex County Emergency Operations Center) is staffed 365 days per year providing for both officer safety and professional call reception and dispatching. The Bethany Beach Police have recently obtained a live scan fingerprinting and digital photography suite (AFIS).  Additionally, BBPD stores the regional intoxilizer for DUI investigations.

All officers are graduates of the Delaware State Police Academy.  This academy lasts approximately 26 weeks and is a live-in academy Monday-Friday.  Upon successful completion of this academy our recruits will complete a 12 week field training program with a senior officer who is certified to instruct these new officers.
